Color can be intimidating - or so I’ve heard. From choosing the right ones that make you feel confident to trying to figure out what colors to wear together (hint: everything goes with denim!), it can definitely scare some people into only wearing black. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been one to run towards any and everything bold and bright. So pairing unlikely color combinations is something that comes easily to me. I’m realizing that not everyone has a knack for it, so I’ll be sharing some easy (and hopefully not intimidating) ways to add more color to your wardrobe.

  1. Wear classic styles. There are some pieces that will always be in style, no matter what. Can you think of a winter where people weren’t wearing turtlenecks? Me either. If you’re in a cold weather city, turtlenecks are a staple and come out of the closet every Fall. Try finding a bright orange (like this one) or bubblegum pink (like this one). You can pair a turtleneck with everything in your closet - from a pair of denim to wearing it over a dress.

Wear a bold classic style.

I wore this classic turtleneck in a vibrant marigold, over a dress to winterize one of my favorite summer pieces. This dress is sleeveless with a low v-neck (definitely not suitable for Fall/Winter in NYC), so adding a sweater and denim jacket made it easy to wear as the temps got cooler.

2. Wear bold colored outerwear. The great thing about coats (in most cases, but you know I’m extra) is that you don’t have to worry about putting a whole outfit together to match your coat. If you’re *not* like me, and actually plan on CLOSING your coat, then it doesn’t matter what colors you’re wearing underneath, because your outwear will do all the talking. This cobalt blue coat from J.O.A. (a brand I also carry in my shop) is a showstopper!

IMG_7795.jpeg
IMG_7772.jpeg

Wear a bold statement coat.

Adding a statement coat can bring any outfit to life! Although this look already had a lot going on, adding the blue coat gave it the extra edge.

IMG_7857.jpeg

3. Wear a bold shoe. Y’all know I LOVE a good shoe! Add any color (and I’m not talking black or brown) to your look and it’s an instant LEWK, honey. Shoes can take an outfit from blah to YAAAASSS, b*%^c in a matter of seconds. Whether it’s a bold yellow pump like this one or a red one like the one below, try adding an extra pop of color this way.

Wear a bold shoe.

Adding a pop of color on your feet is a super easy way to infuse more color into your outfits. Even if it’s a colorful pair of sneakers - no need to wear heels to be fly!

A New York Love Story

IMG_3219.JPG

Everything the dating “experts” tell you NOT to do/expect is pretty much a part of our story.

1. We met in a club

2. Became “familiar” quickly. 😂

3. Had in-house dates early on.

4. Dealt with ex drama

5. Broke up & got back together.

6. Moved in before engagement or any talk of marriage.

7. No magical marriage proposal moment.

IMG_3221.JPG

BUT, here we are, happy and in love.

Funny thing though: we *almost* didn’t even make it to our first date. So here’s the story:

Dre and I met at a club. 😳 It was my friend’s birthday and we had plans to go to Atlantic City for the weekend. At the last minute, she changed her mind and another friend of ours invited us to a party that she was working (as a a promoter). There were 3 of us, my friend & her boyfriend, and me. I knew a lot of people there, so I did my little social butterfly thing and roamed around/danced alone most of the evening so her and the bf could hang. At one point, I wandered, tipsy and in a great mood, over to the bar to get a glass of water - where I bumped into Dre. Literally fell into his arms. The dress I had on had an open back and his hand found his way to my bare back and conversation ensued.

Me: My back is sweaty.

Dre: *shrugs* I don’t care, do you?

Me: *shrugs* not really.

I don’t quite remember what else was said #blamethevodka, but at some point he introduced me to his sister and friend who he’d come to the party with. I do remember mentioning where I lived, and him saying that his friend lived a block away. He’ll say I invited him over to our table for a drink but I don’t remember that, I just remember that once I walked away, I kept seeing him every time I turned around. On the dance floor, by the stairs, by our table. LOL. I gave him (& 2 other guys) my number that cold, December Saturday night.

IMG_3211.JPG

I had heard from the other two already, but by Tuesday evening, hadn’t heard a peep from Mr. Touch My Sweaty Back. LATE that night - like after midnight - I finally get a text, “hey, can you talk?”

Um, no. *ignore* And best believe I won’t be talking to him if he decides to call later. Who does he think he is that he can text me that late, for the first time, and I’m supposed to be ready and willing to talk at that hour. No, again.

IMG_3205.JPG

I get a call the next afternoon from the same number. *sends to voicemail*

And I was determined to not even listen to the message. But my curiosity got the best of me, so I finally checked it as I was heading home from work that day.

Ugh. He has a nice voice. DOUBLE UGH. He’s witty & funny.

So now I have to call him back. I don’t really know what it was, but something about hearing his voice made me smile. Just typing this out now gives me that same happy feeling - what we later called the “warm & fuzzies” for each other.

On that call, we planned a first date, and well, it never happened. HE STOOD ME UP!

Not really, but I like to say that. LOL! He called me a few hours before our date and told me he was styling a photoshoot and it was running later than he expected so he wouldn’t be able to make it, and politely asked if we could reschedule.

He was STYLING A PHOTOSHOOT. If that right there doesn’t tell me we were meant to be together…! So yeah, we rescheduled, had a blast (even though our friends who were on the double date with us were kissing before we’d even hugged each other LOL) and, well there’s a whole lot of other stuff that happened before we got here, but I’m sure you’re just ready to see some cute kids. Maybe I’ll share more of our story later. Until then, feast on the cuteness!

Don't just sit there - 3 Tips to Keep Moving When You're Unsure of the Next Steps

At times, I find myself unsure of the next steps, and I used to completely shut down when that happened. Figuring that since I didn’t know where to go, I’d just sit. I can’t tell you how many times I completely stopped moving when it came to Vetu de Joy because I was stuck and had no idea what to do next. I’d sit on my hands, afraid to misstep, and sometimes, afraid to take any steps at all. This not only cost me MONEY but it cost me some of my esteem! I started feeling like I didn’t know what to do because maybe I just wasn’t good enough to be doing it. Smh.

Not taking any steps turned out to be way worse than making a wrong turn. Action is absolutely essential to creating momentum, and when we stand still, we’re basically telling the Universe that we don’t want anything and don’t want to go anywhere. So guess what we get? Nothing. Once you start taking those steps, no matter how small, it triggers everything around you to also start moving.

IMG_3023.JPG

So when you feel stuck, uninspired, and overwhelmed with what comes next, here are some tips I’ve used to help me keep going:

1. Breathe. Really. Sometimes you just have to stop, breathe, and realize how difficult you’re making things. We do it to ourselves, and a lot of times, we can undo it. Take some time to get some deep breaths in, clear your mind of all the clutter and do what feels right, instead of overthinking.

Random note, but my twist out was ON POINT during this shoot. LOL!

2. Ask for advice. This is a tough one for me. I always think I can figure it out myself, but sometimes, we just can’t. Don’t be afraid to display a little vulnerability and ask for help. Talk to a friend, a loved one or someone else who has worked on a similar project what they think of the work you’ve done so far, and how you could take things to the next level. Even if you don’t follow their advice to the T, you may get some nuggets of inspiration that may propel you forward.

IMG_3252.JPG
IMG_3244.JPG

3. Step away. Not for good! But maybe it’s just for an hour or a week, give yourself time to focus on something else. You never know where your next idea or next piece of inspiration will come from, and it may come when you step away from your project briefly (given pending deadlines). You may walk back to it with a renewed sense of vigor!

IMG_3245.JPG

Think of it this way, when you get into your car, type the directions into your phone/GPS, start the ignition, put on your seatbelt, but fail to put the car in Drive and press the gas? Guess what… the GPS isn’t going to give you any directions, and you won’t get any until you put the car in Drive and start moving! Even if you start heading the wrong way, the GPS will tell you, “make a legal u-turn”. There’s no need to fear a misstep because in some way, you’ll be redirected onto the correct path.

3 Ways to Style a Striped Blazer

StripedBlazer-jeans2.jpg

I’m sure you know by now, about my love of stripes. So when i saw this Zara blazer, it was an automatic purchase for me, because I knew I’d be able to wear it so many times, in so many different ways.

Although you don’t see them often here, I wear jeans a lot in my every day life. They’re easy to throw on, whether with sneakers, boots or heels, and you can wear pretty much anything with them. For a simple look, wear your striped blazer with a plain tee, a pair of distressed denim and a cute pair of pumps. I added a floral pair…because #mixedprints, but any pair will do!

More in line with what you see me in on a regular basis, I styled my vertically-striped Zara blazer with a diagonally-striped dress! I purchased these pieces at the same time, but didn’t think to wear them together until I took them both out of the box. I mean… they really couldn’t be a more perfect match!

Keeping with adding more color to the look, I paired the blazer with a pair of red pants and a grey graphic tee. I threw on a bold statement necklace and a pair of rhinestone booties to complete my rocker-mom chic look.

Top style resolutions to add to your list for 2018

Happy-New-Year-2018-Images-4.jpg

Happy New Year, everyone!

To start 2018 on the right foot, style-wise, I've teamed up with some awesome stylists to come up with some style resolutions to add to your list for 2018! These are some really great tips and I've linked each stylist's social media and blog so you can check them out, as well.

Enjoy!

1.  Arash -  Be more ethically-conscious in 2018.

There’s still a lot of work to be done by most major high street brands when it comes to transparency over working conditions and who makes their clothes, especially when you have workers writing pleas for help on labels (I’m looking at you Zara). But there are a few things you can do in 2018 to be more ethically conscious.

  • Take care of what you already own! Rewear and repair your existing wardrobe.
  • Look for clothes swaps, buy second or vintage
  • Shop less, buy better quality pieces that are durable and will last, and only choose items you absolutely love.
  • Research ethical brands, there are some amazing ethical brands that are affordable, ship worldwide and are just as stylish as any major chain on the high street

2.  Chrissy - Shop secondhand

Don’t forget to shop vintage and charity shops before you hit the high street. Look for on trend items that you can get for a fraction of the price or look for staples. Your style will be way more unique and you can style for you.

You can look ten pounds slimmer just by dressing your body shape and understanding cuts and styles that will work well with your assets.

4.  Niki - Celebrate your assets and embrace your curves

We spend far too much time focusing on hiding the parts of our body that we’re not totally happy with it’s time for a change!  Make 2018 the year that you embrace your assets and curves and stop wasting time on all that negativity.  When I’m with a new client I ask them to list the parts of their body that they ARE happy with, it’s a great exercise to do as it forces them to think beyond what they consider to be their flaws.  You should try it!  If you’re struggling to identify any (and I really hope you’re not) ask your partner or a friend, I can guarantee they’ll reel off a ton of things!  Once you’ve identified them start to buy and wear clothes that show them off!

5. Shannan - Ensure that you have the proper basics to build a foundation for a great wardrobe

Make sure you have invested in quality basics which help to build your wardrobe and will set the foundation for the rest of your pieces.  These style essentials will allow you to mix-and-match looks and play with color and textures.  When choosing your basic clothing essentials, it's important to consider the fit, length, flattering cuts for your shape and making sure your clothes feel comfortable.  Here are 10 basics for a great wardrobe to get you started: a little black dress, a blazer, dark wash jeans, a black pencil skirt, black trousers, white button-down shirt, black or neutral pumps, a pair of flats, accessories, and a structured handbag. Every piece in your wardrobe should reflect your personal style, and that includes your basics.

6.  Darlene - Style on the outside can be effected by how you feel on the inside and vice versa so dress in clothing that makes you feel confident.

For example, how did you feel that last time you stood up at the boardroom table to share a brilliant idea, chances are if you were not confident in the clothing you were wearing you may not have stood up at all.

We have the choice to make our outfit work for us or against us each day, clothing can make you look and feel like a million dollars or not…  Our lifestyles can change, we take on a bigger role in our companies, become mother’s or father’s, divorce or move to a different country etc. these life changes will effect our lifestyle and so may confuse our style.  In order to make sense of it all we need to know who we are, right down to the basics.  So how do we take control so we can be confident in our clothing choices:

1)   Learn about your body shape – knowing your body shape will help you understand which styles flatter your body.

2)   Consult with a personal stylist for advise on your skin tone and which colours suit you  – knowing the colours that flatter your skin tone can make you look 10 years younger

3)   Post your favorite outfits to a Pinterest board to figure out your style personality – your style personality will give you an idea of the clothing you prefer to wear.  This information along with your body shape and colour will give you a great foundation.

4)   Finally take into consideration your lifestyle, what do you do for a living, do you have a hobby, go to gym, what are the percentages of time in a week you spend on each. Once you have this information then you will then be able to divide your shopping budget appropriately so not to over spend on areas you don’t spend much time in.

Remember if you are not the DIY kind of person consult a personal stylist to do it all for you, it will save you time and money in the long run.  Xx

7.  Sam - Ensure proper fit

My 2018 fashion resolution really applies to EVERY year:  ALWAYS ensure proper fit of your garments.  We have all fallen victim to the term “ready to wear,” which is hardly ever, in fact, READY to wear!  Unless you happen to be the identical twin of the fit model a designer uses, chances are that an alteration will need to be made in hem, cut, or possibly even a tweak in structure!

When you work with a stylist, she can determine if the cut of the garment works on your shape, if the drape of the fabric works over YOUR particular body and more.  I always sit and move around a bit in clothes as I try them on as well.  This is a great indicator if the piece will CONTINUE to fit will when it’s worn, or if I should size down or alter.  At the end of the day, having a good seamstress on speed dial is critical to ensuring that each item in your closet looks its very best on you!

8.  Christina Take more risks with colour or stop comparing yourself to other women on social media

Black on black on black is typically my go to, it is easy and always looks polished but for 2018 it’s time to give color a bit of the limelight.I have been gravitating a lot towards my ‘power color’ red (that color that helps you act like a total badass when you walk into a room, everyone has one!) I have been wearing red lipstick, or my red pumps just to give my black outfits new life.

My second resolution is probably the most important for all women: Please please please stop comparing yourself to the latest insta blogger! Not only are our bodies different but you really do yourself a disservice by not being able to find your voice in fashion. You don't want to look like everyone else, that’s the beauty of the fashion industry as well as the beauty in being a human being. Continue to stand out and experiment with what you love to wear. If you’re stuck, then call a stylist, we will help you become what you want the world to see!

9.  Mikaela - Be bolder with prints and buy 5 printed pieces this year

Get BOLD with prints, and add these 5 basic prints to your wardrobe in 2018: Black/white polka dots, nautical stripes, camouflage, florals & leopard. Whether you’re mixing them together or wearing one at a time, each of these is sure to spice up your wardrobe! Any of these prints/pieces can be worn together. Stripes, camouflage and leopard prints are all considered neutrals (yes, really! Check out this post I wrote with tips on How to Mix Prints Like a Pro)

10.  Extra one (because it rounds it up to a nice 10) -  Invest in yourself

We cannot stress enough how important it is to give yourself the love and recognition you deserve. If you think back to those moments when you felt good about yourself, I bet many of them were moments when you’d spent time on your appearance or wore an outfit that made you feel like you could take on the world.  I know it’s clichéd to say this, but what you wear can have such a powerful and positive effect on your confidence and you are entitled to feel the effects of that Every. Single. Day. But the truth is that many of you don’t know how to harness this power.

Well my friends, luckily for you, Personal Stylists exist and we are not just for the rich and famous.  In fact, many of us have little interest in working with celebrities and would much rather make YOU look and feel abso-bloody-lutly amazing!

We understand body shape and we know how to balance your proportions and highlight your assets.  We know about how garments should fit the body and understand how to get the perfect fit. And we know which colors will flatter you and which will make you look tired and ill.

All of us here have helped countless clients create a more harmonious life through detoxing their closet, empowering them to shop effectively for their style, shape and lifestyle, and we’ve witnessed each and every one of them become stronger and more confident.  So, if you want to harness the power and confidence that comes from dressing well, but don’t know where to start, then invest in some professional help!
