Color can be intimidating - or so I’ve heard. From choosing the right ones that make you feel confident to trying to figure out what colors to wear together (hint: everything goes with denim!), it can definitely scare some people into only wearing black. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been one to run towards any and everything bold and bright. So pairing unlikely color combinations is something that comes easily to me. I’m realizing that not everyone has a knack for it, so I’ll be sharing some easy (and hopefully not intimidating) ways to add more color to your wardrobe.

  1. Wear classic styles. There are some pieces that will always be in style, no matter what. Can you think of a winter where people weren’t wearing turtlenecks? Me either. If you’re in a cold weather city, turtlenecks are a staple and come out of the closet every Fall. Try finding a bright orange (like this one) or bubblegum pink (like this one). You can pair a turtleneck with everything in your closet - from a pair of denim to wearing it over a dress.

Wear a bold classic style.

I wore this classic turtleneck in a vibrant marigold, over a dress to winterize one of my favorite summer pieces. This dress is sleeveless with a low v-neck (definitely not suitable for Fall/Winter in NYC), so adding a sweater and denim jacket made it easy to wear as the temps got cooler.

2. Wear bold colored outerwear. The great thing about coats (in most cases, but you know I’m extra) is that you don’t have to worry about putting a whole outfit together to match your coat. If you’re *not* like me, and actually plan on CLOSING your coat, then it doesn’t matter what colors you’re wearing underneath, because your outwear will do all the talking. This cobalt blue coat from J.O.A. (a brand I also carry in my shop) is a showstopper!

Wear a bold statement coat.

Adding a statement coat can bring any outfit to life! Although this look already had a lot going on, adding the blue coat gave it the extra edge.

3. Wear a bold shoe. Y’all know I LOVE a good shoe! Add any color (and I’m not talking black or brown) to your look and it’s an instant LEWK, honey. Shoes can take an outfit from blah to YAAAASSS, b*%^c in a matter of seconds. Whether it’s a bold yellow pump like this one or a red one like the one below, try adding an extra pop of color this way.

Wear a bold shoe.

Adding a pop of color on your feet is a super easy way to infuse more color into your outfits. Even if it’s a colorful pair of sneakers - no need to wear heels to be fly!

Matchy, matchy.

It's not often that you'll see me wearing a super matchy outfit. But when I found this blazer that perfectly matched the Walk Away Pants currently in my shop (only 1 pair left in a sz M!), I had to buy it. I've had this blazer for a while, and surprisingly, have only worn it once before even though I'm completely obsessed with the stripes! For this look, a black black, fitted, v-neck tee was the simplest pairing, and to add a little color & interest to the look, I wore my orange pumps.

How would you wear it? Would you wear both pieces together or separate them? Let me know in the comments!

The Kimono: Pt. Trois

I've got this thing for kimonos. The brighter, the better. So when I found this one at Forever21 (now sold out, unfortunately), I had to have it! Because the color is so vibrant, I decided to pair it with a simple pair of jeans and white tee. I threw on some gold jewelry to add some interest, and voila!

Three Ways to Wear: Striped Blouse

As you all know, I love wearing color and lots of prints, but I still always shop with multiple outfits in mind. How can I get the most out of this piece? How many different ways can I wear it? What do I have at home that I can wear this with? These things are always floating through my head when I’m shopping for myself or helping others pull together wardrobes. Fun fact: this is something I learned from my father (a man who I’d never seen shop for himself – but always told me to shop with my current closet in mind)!

As an expecting mom who's in between maternity clothes and regular clothes, let me tell you - it has been a challenge figuring out what to wear on a daily basis! Not to mention, I'm trying to go as long as possible without having to buy anything maternity. Haha. My style philosophy is quite simple. Only buy/keep/wear things that you love and that bring you joy. That way, when you get dressed every day, you'll always be Dressed in Joy, and you'll always feel good!

For this post, I’ll be featuring a sheer striped blouse as my 3 ways to wear item. Stripes are everywhere this season, and this is a classic silhouette that you can wear anywhere – to work, to run errands and in the evening. This particular one is about 3 years old, from Old Navy, and it’s a bit oversized, so it fits my pregnant belly (for now!). As a lover of prints, I always find a way to shake things up a bit and mix prints together. I know print mixing isn’t for everyone, so I’ve also included a couple other ways to wear this blouse, that are just as stylish. Any of these looks can be worn with any light-weight blouse you have, striped or not. I hope you enjoy!

With denim shorts:

Seeing this look now you can understand why I emphasized wearing “light-weight” blouse. I love this look because it elevates your denim shorts just a bit, while still keeping the look casual. I threw on my favorite suede Pumas from Solange’s Word to the Woman collection a couple of years ago for a pop of color.

With floral pants:

Something I always say when it comes to mixing prints together, is treat stripes (& camo & leopard) as a neutral. Pair stripes with pretty much ANYTHING, and it will work, I promise! Here, I’ve paired my striped blouse with a pair of floral printed pants from H&M. This works really well because the pants are black, which pulls from the black in the top. I’ve added a white solid layer that pulls the whole look together since white is in both pieces. I chose a simple shoe to keep the focus on the outfit!

With a skirt:

This one is a little unorthodox, but totally works, pregnant or not! Initially I pulled the skirt up over my belly but thought, what if I wore it as a dress?? Once I did that, it totally changed the look of this Forever21 pleated skirt. Now it looks like a babydoll dress and works so well for me, especially, since I have this extra load I’m carrying around these days! :-)

I hope this gives you a little glimpse into my personal style, and a few ideas on how to style your bump if you're expecting!

Travel in Prints: Bermuda

On (or around) my birthday, which is August 19th, I like to get out of the city and see a little something different. This year was no different. I enlisted a couple of girlfriends into taking  a quick jaunt with me to Bermuda! The idea of pink sand beaches really had me intrigued, and being that it's only an hour and a half flight from NYC, it was a no-brainer. Needless to say, it wasn't too difficult getting my girls to come along. ;-)

We spent most of our time relaxing on Horseshoe Bay beach (since it was so close to our hotel & absolutely gorgeous!), but we did get to venture into town for a bit.

Packing tips for Bermuda:

  • Lots of flowy, comfy dresses - the high was only about 78 while we were there, but it feels *much* warmer than that. I'd packed a couple pairs of pants for the evenings, but only ended up wearing a jumpsuit one night to dinner, because it was a bit rainy earlier in that day.
  • Bright & colorful swimwear! The beaches are absolutely stunning, and you'll want to take lots of pictures
  • Comfy walking shoes - we walked quite a bit around Hamilton one evening, and I had to switch shoes with one of my girlfriends because her feet were hurting towards the end of the night.

And now... pics. Enjoy!
